Piano Progress | Week One

It’s been a long time since I really buckled back down on last year’s new year’s resolution of learning the piano. I made a lot of progress initially when I started last spring, and then it sort of took a back burner to everything else whenever Andy and I moved out of Dallas last summer. I still played every now and then and thankfully Andy kept me really motivated. Now, I have given myself the challenge of uploading one new video every week of a new cover song or progress update on the piano of some sort, to keep me learning and moving forward! I don’t have an end goal in sight, I think after a few months I will just re-evaluate the challenge and see where it’s taken me!

Here it is: my first ever full song on the piano! It’s not even close to perfect, but everyone has to start somewhere.

Hey, Andy

Andy is a musical star, although you’d be hard-pressed to get him to admit it. Every now and then he graces me with his presence at the keyboard. Here we started off with some Hey Jude, and unadvisedly attempted a little improv. As you can see, I’m not quite at that level yet… Enjoy ~

Introduction to Piano

My new year’s resolution is to learn to play the piano. I have no musical background, whatsoever. I really like singing though, and I’ve always had a little fantasy of being capable of some singer/songwriter level action. I don’t aspire to be the next Sara Bareilles, but to be able to play on the keys with some skill has always been a dream of mine. I purchased an old keyboard fro a co-worker several years ago, to this day I’m still not convinced I got a good deal, but it works, and I’ve been carrying it around with me ever since. I must have moved 6 times in that time period, and while my belongings always come and go and change, I have stubbornly held onto this keyboard.

Flashback to a couple months ago, and my lovely Andy set up a corner in the living room with a stand, a speaker, all the cables, and some music books for me to get started with. “No excuses!” he said. At last, I had everything I needed to sit down and freakin’ learn already! He’s such a gold star.

It’s been a long time since I’ve picked up something completely brand new to me and tried to learn it. Guys, playing the piano is really hard. Especially since when I began, I didn’t even know what notes were or what a metronome was for. All the keys look the same! I can definitely feel myself making progress though, and even my tiny baby steps are totally thrilling.

Here’s a little compilation of some of my progress so far!

If you’ve ever dreamed of doing something, anything, just do it! Excuses are easy to make and even easier to believe, but 9 times out of 10 the only thing really standing in your way, is you.
